AUGUST REVIEWS

Little late to this one, but here goes.. Remember to scroll down if you’re looking for the event post. It’s directly under this one. If you were interested in seeing what I read last month though, this is the right post…

Mega Centurions #1

I actually loved this one a LOT. This was a really fun superhero-undercover story. Sort of dystopian in tone, it’s about a group of people who were tapped in as superheroes and then.. discarded? And sent back to the civilian life. And told to keep secret. Excited for the next couple issues honestly. I liked the writing and art a lot.

The Dead Lucky #1

This one was highly anticipated- it’s set in SF and has a very tech dystopian premise. It’s interesting, but I’m not totally invested yet. The art is great and I’ll tune in to #2 & 3 if only to see where it’s going. This might be one of the ones that would be worth waiting for the trade.

20XX Transport (one-shot)

This was a cool little sci-fi one-off comic. It felt very Black Mirror x Love and Robots.

Batman Secret Files

To be fair I only picked this up because The Gardener is included (it’s the last story) but all of them were interesting of their own merit- though not a full consistent storyline. This was a compilation of one-off series in the Gothamverse. It’s worth picking up if you didn’t get a chance to catch the issues themselves, and of course if you’re looking for The Gardener in trade format.

Aggretsuko: Out to Lunch #1

This was SOOOOO CUTE and FUNNY!! I really recommend this to anyone who needs a lil light hearted comic, especially if you’re a fan of the show!

Nine Stones vol 1

Bruhhhh.. This one was FUCKED up. I can’t believe it’s only volume ONE. This was sort of like if the artists for Arcane teamed up with Junji Ito’s gay twin. (If Junji Ito had a gay twin.)

Han Solo & Chewbacca #5

Enjoying the hell out of this. If this gets a trade paperback I will definitely order some for the store and I totally would recommend picking it up. Especially if you’re a Han Solo fan. (I am.)

Giant-Size Gwen Stacey

This was cute, honestly. I picked it up because the cover was adorable (totally giving Clueless) and of course it’s a Momoko cover so I had to. (Ever since discovering Peach Momoko, I’m hooked on her art..!) The story itself seems like it might have been an old one – it’s kind of like Gwen Stacey as a little Nancy Drew comic. Peter Parker/Spiderman doesn’t really show up at all.

Avengers and Moon Girl

This was super cute! Definitely recommend checking out the Moon Girl comics if you can. There’s a few of them now.

my favorite panel from Deadliest Bouquet #1

Deadliest Bouquet is very much a classic murder-mystery style story and I super recommend it for anyone who likes that genre.

The Deep & Dark Blue

VERY CUTE!! Loved this one a lot. Deep & Dark Blue stars a trans girl and her brother “hiding” in plain sight as girls in their kingdom to avoid being recognized as the princes/heirs after a deadly coup. This is such a heartwarming and touching story with really excellent worldbuilding as well. I definitely recommend picking this one up!!!

Survival Street #1

BRUHHHH this comic goes OFF. I loved the critique of capitalism in this format – it very much felt like Parable of the Sower, but muppets. I foolishly only got a couple of the first issue but if you see it around anywhere, grab one. It’s good.

True KVLT #1

Definitely recommend checking this one out – it’s a witty slice of life style story that sort of gave Breaking Bad vibes?? Average dude in an average life that wakes up and decides that crime is the route he’d rather go. Or something like that. To be honest, I never watched Breaking Bad. But I liked this.

Heart Eyes #1

I liked this a lot actually – I’m a sucker for a deranged female protagonist and this DEFINITELY has that. Really curious to see where they go with this. I am impressed because I feel like they fit a lot in a small amount of pages without too much exposition or background. Overall super well done. I think eventually it will work really well as a trade too.

Cold Bodies

I got a bunch of these because I love Magdalene Visaggio but this was not my favorite of hers. I was invested in the story but the end was super unsatisfying. I almost want another one just to get some answers to my questions!

Tokyo Ghoul vol 1

I know I’m late to the party on this one but I am finally starting this series. It’s pretty good and I genuinely love anything zombie/vampire/monster so I’ve been wanting to read it for a while. Glad I finally picked it up. I may continue the series if I get the time.

Crazy Food Truck vol. 1

This was fun. It’s very Chobits meets Food Wars meets Cowboy Bebop, imo. If you like food & anime tiddies this might be the manga for you. Also grumpy old guy protaganist. Lol.

That’s it for now! (I probably forgot a few but this is what I made sure to take pictures of. Lol.)
